Leadership Zones
Where am I operating from right now?

Clarity. Courage. Growth.
Leadership development often focuses on what leaders need to do differently. The Leadership Trail Map™ goes beneath the surface to help leaders recognize the capacities they rely on most naturally, especially under pressure, and create more room to choose what the moment actually requires.
The Core Idea
The strengths that helped create a leader’s success can become automatic over time. The work is not to discard what works. It is to notice when a familiar pattern is shaping the response and expand the range of choices available.
What got you here may not be what takes you there.
Your Unique Map
Where am I operating from right now?
What leadership capacities am I relying on in this moment?
Where might I need to pause, notice, or reconnect?
The Leadership Trail Map™: A Guide to the Terrain
Leadership Trails
The Trails are not personality types or fixed identities. They are leadership capacities we can draw from depending on the terrain. Each can be under-expressed, calibrated, or over-extended. The question is not “Which Trail am I?” The question is “What does this moment require?”
Helps create direction, progress, accountability, and movement.
Helps us care, coach, resource, and strengthen others.
Brings voice, perspective, ideas, insight, and value.
Helps us adjust to changing terrain while remaining grounded and aligned.
Helps us pause, assess, reflect, and consider before acting.
Under-expressed | Calibrated | Over-extended
The capacity itself is not the problem. Effectiveness depends on how it is expressed and what the moment requires.
Hitching Posts
Hitching Posts create space for reflection within the terrain. They are not steps to complete in order. Each offers a different place to pause, reconnect, and consider what the moment is asking of you.
How am I experiencing this?
Is my behavior aligned with my values and intentions?
Can I stay grounded and lead well under pressure?
How do I influence and relate to others?
What is the next version of leadership being called forward?
Leadership Zones
Reactive, defensive, or control-focused.
Results-driven, achievement-focused, externally validated.
Reflective, pattern-aware, emotionally attuned.
Purpose-driven, values-aligned, congruent.
Leadership Zones are contextual and fluid. They are not levels of leadership and there is no perfect Zone to reach and remain in. Leaders move among them as circumstances, pressure, relationships, and capacity change. Awareness of the terrain creates more room for intentional choice.
Where Choice Becomes Available
The moment you recognize that a familiar pattern is active.
A new vantage point reveals additional paths and choices.
The opportunity to choose the capacity or response the moment actually requires.
The Map helps make the terrain visible. Choice changes how we travel it.
Beneath the surface
Executive development often begins with behavior: communicate better, delegate more, build trust, think strategically.
The Leadership Trail Map™ asks a different question:
What is happening beneath the behavior?
When familiar patterns become visible, leaders gain more room to choose what the moment actually requires.
Ways to Experience the Method
Executive coaching, immersive leadership experiences, and retreats.
Experiential development that makes team dynamics visible and actionable.
The Coach Partner Pathway™ uses The Leadership Trail Map™ to deepen awareness of leadership patterns and expand the coaching conversation.

The Leadership Trail Map™ was developed by Jennifer Kozel, PCC, SPHR, founder of The Gravara Group, to help accomplished leaders recognize the capacities and patterns shaping how they lead, especially under pressure, and expand their range of intentional choice.
